Biscuits Tastes Better with Butter…and Sugar and Cinnamon
It took me awhile to get on the Pinterest train, but once I did I was full steam ahead. It's incredibly addicting and all it takes is one interesting pin for you to fall into it's blackhole and the next thing you know, it's 3am and you've added more recipes, crafts, home design, fashion and vacation ideas to your boards than you could possibly ever eat, make, do, see or experience...but it was fun and inspiring and you can't wait to get sucked into the Pinterest vortex again! I was getting ready to visit with my sisters-by-choice and their kids [...]
When I was a little girl, I used to read the encyclopedia - you know, back when it was a collection of books and not crowd sourced on the internet. I'd sit in front of the bookcase and pick a random letter and just start flipping through it and see what I could find. More often than not, I found another country that I wanted to visit. I'm pretty sure it was the layers of maps that got my attention. I was fascinated by how a country could change and grow so much, yet still stay the same with it's [...]
I Am a Badass and So Are You!
As part of my resolutions for a more purposeful life this year, I have a goal to read 25 books and one of the books on my list is "You Are a Badass" by Jennifer Sincero. I finished it yesterday and it should be on the required reading list of anyone with a beating heart. I don't even know how I stumbled upon the book to put it on my Goodreads Want To Read List, but I know I was a big fan of the title. Who doesn't like to consider themselves a badass, if only on occasion? Someone who doesn't take any [...]
The Power of Red Lipstick
My friend Erika - that's her with her adorable rescue pup, Ginger! - is an amazing human being who is smart and talented and generous and thoughtful and funny and inspiring and, on top of all this awesomeness, she has ridiculously white teeth and rocks the heck out of red lipstick and I'm insanely jealous about it. As a blonde, I've always been encouraged to wear red because it's supposed to look fabulous on me, but it just never looks right. I could say it looks too bold and dramatic or that it's the wrong shade of red (I'm definitely more of [...]
I Have a Better Idea
I pray daily - multiple times a day actually - because loving Jesus is my happy place...along with any craft store or froyo shop. Those places make me pretty happy too... Sometimes He answers our prayers right away and sometimes we need to be a little more patient and sometimes He says, "Thanks for the suggestion, but I have a better idea." This was one of those situations. As I was preparing to cover the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland, I was praying for a particular opportunity to open up for me. I prayed and I prayed about it for months, but [...]
You’re Only as Good as Your Cinnamon Roll Pancakes
While I might be an only child, I have a handful of sisters-by-choice who have graciously allowed me to be Aunt Julie to their bundles of joy. I couldn't be more thankful for the love, laughs and abundance of huggies and kissies they've brought into my life, but as far as they are concerned...I'm only as good as my cinnamon roll pancakes. During one visit to see my friend, Debbie, and her crew of four, I decided that it was a great opportunity to test out some of the recipes I had been drooling over on Pinterest. One of those recipes was [...]
Who Goes to Estonia?
As you may know, I'm a hockey writer. I get paid to travel all over North America and Europe and watch hockey games and write about the players. Not sure if that's your dream job, but it's definitely mine and I love having the opportunity to live it out in real life and not just the fantasyland in my head. Plus, it's super helpful when I have things like "Visit a new country" on my annual To Do List. Thanks to hockey, I've been to Finland, Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, Austria, and Poland, but now I can also add Estonia to [...]
Rediscovering the Library
I made many goals last year and one of them was to read 15 books. I thought one a month - plus a few thrown in to help pass the time on vacation - was completely attainable. In fact, I thought I'd have no problem exceeding that goal and reading 20, if not more! Guess what didn't get crossed off my list? That's right...I read a measly eight books last year. How embarrassing.... Part of it was me not taking my goal seriously and waiting until the middle of summer to start doing anything about it. The other part is [...]
My Most Productive Year Yet
Thirteen months ago, I found myself saying 'I'd love to do that someday…' or 'I've always wanted to do that!' far more than I'd like to admit. Once I realized what I was doing - or more appropriately, what I wasn't doing - I started asking myself why. Why wasn't I doing any of those things that I really wanted to do, like travel more or learn another language or take control of my financial future or challenge myself in new ways? After some reflection, I realized I had allowed things that weren't important to me become important leaving no [...]
